Best Time to Visit Kodaikanal: A Month-by-Month Guide
Kodaikanal is lovely all year, but the experience changes completely between the misty monsoon and the crisp post-monsoon clear days. Here's when to go.
The 'Princess of Hill Stations' sits at 2,100 metres in the Palani hills, which means the weather is mild all year — but the mood of the place shifts dramatically with the seasons. Choosing the right window makes the difference between clear valley views and a romantic wall of fog.
April to June — peak season and clearest skies
Summer is when the plains bake and Kodaikanal becomes a refuge. Daytime temperatures hover around 20–25°C, the lake is at its prettiest, and viewpoints like Coaker's Walk and Pillar Rocks reward you with long, clear vistas. It is also the busiest and priciest time, so book your stay and car early.
July to September — the green monsoon
The south-west monsoon wraps the town in mist and drizzle. It is atmospheric and quiet, and the shola forests are at their greenest, but viewpoints are often clouded over and the ghat road needs a careful driver. If you love moody weather and fewer crowds, this is your season.
October to March — crisp and cool
Post-monsoon brings the clearest air of the year and cold nights that can drop near 8°C in December and January. This is wonderful for walks, photography and the gardens, though you will want warm layers after sunset.
Whatever month you pick, start the climb from Madurai or Dindigul in the morning. The Batlagundu ghat has tight bends, and an early start means better light and a calmer drive.
Getting there
The nearest airport is Madurai (about 3 hours) and Trichy is a popular landing point too. Most travellers take a one-way taxi up the hill so they aren't tied to bus timings, and have the car for viewpoints that are spread far apart.
