Ooty has been a summer escape since the British built it as a sanatorium, and the bones of that era — the lake, the gardens, the toy train — still anchor any visit. But the Nilgiris are far bigger than the town, and a car lets you reach the quieter corners.
The classics worth the hype
- Ride the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage line, ideally the Coonoor–Ooty leg.
- Stroll the Government Botanical Gardens and row a boat on Ooty Lake.
- Drive up Doddabetta Peak, the highest point in the Nilgiris, for a 360° view.

When to go
April to June is peak summer season; September to November is gorgeous and quieter after the rains. Pack a jacket year-round — evenings are cold at 2,200 metres.
