The Meenakshi Amman Temple is the beating heart of Madurai — a vast complex of fourteen gopurams covered in thousands of brightly painted figures, dedicated to the goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar.
Darshan timings
The temple is generally open early morning to around midday and again from late afternoon into the evening. The unmissable ritual is the nightly palli arai (bedchamber) ceremony, when the deity is ceremonially carried to rest — arrive well before closing to witness it.
Dress code and entry
- Traditional, modest clothing is expected; avoid shorts and sleeveless tops.
- Footwear and, often, cameras and phones must be left outside — use the cloakroom.
- The art museum in the Thousand Pillar Hall is well worth the entry fee.
Pair the temple with Thirumalai Nayak Palace and an evening at the temple's night ceremony, then start early the next morning for Kodaikanal or Rameswaram.
